John is married to Eleanor
and feels much younger than his 58 years! They have lived in St
Albans for over 30 years and throughout this time have been members of
Christ Church, an informal Anglican congregation. Their daughter
Ruth and her husband Jon with their three young children live in Cambridge, and their son Andrew
works as an engineer in
Manchester.
Behind the scenes
John is a passionate behind-the-scenes administrator
who loves 'sorting things out' and 'tidying things up' - and displays
all the annoying characteristics of such a person! Over the years
he has moved into more of an up-front ministry, as a trainer, speaker,
and adviser. He wants to help Christians enjoy learning how to organise well.
He read Mathematics at Cambridge which taught him
how to analyse problems. After a brief spell in what he always thought was
going to be his life's work of transportation engineering, he joined
Scripture Union in London to organise the office for their schools
work.
After five years at SU, he became the first full-time
Church Administrator at a large London church. During this time
he qualified as a Chartered Secretary, to give himself a backbone
of training in administrative practice.
Administry
In 1981 he left to set up Administry, an idea for
applying the principles of church administration he had been developing
to a wider circle of Christian work.
An unusual publications programme was initiated, based
on research in a growing number of member-churches. To this was
added support for Church Administrators all over the UK. A training programme was introduced, followed by
a fledgling consultancy service.
In 1993, after 12 years of running Administry, he
handed over the leadership to focus on the developing work of consultancy
and training. Demand for this grew considerably in the next few
years.
Today
In 1999 he became convinced (to his surprise) that
God was moving him on. Since then he has worked as a self-employed consultant and trainer in a steadily widening range of topics under the headings of organisation and people-skills.
Over the years the heart of his work has gradually shifted from administration alone to helping churches and Christian mission agencies become effective in all they do. This means he now undertakes a wide range of assignments.
What has not changed, however, is his enthusiasm for what he does and his longing to see Christians get their act together, so that their life in Jesus Christ, and their work for him, can prosper.
