An explanation from John

For the past few years there has been no national network of people employed by churches as administrators in any form.

The organisation Administry, of which I was privileged to be a part for 18 years, held a register of such people with over 500 names on it, ran regular events for Church Administrators and provided specialist resources.

Since Administry closed, this register has been lost.  Over the past few years several people have commented to me that they regret this and miss the ability to make contact with fellow Administrators in other churches, to have access to resources and to know they are not alone in this work.

There are several denominational/group events around the country, but there is nothing that puts these posts on the church map, as it were, throughout the UK.

A new start

I am therefore re-establishing such a network, although I would be very happy for practising Church Administrators to take it over in due course.

In the first instance I am establishing a listing of such people within various categories and making this information available.  There is already a simple bimonthly letter and we are starting to develop local and specialist events, an e-newsletter, professional forums and online discussions.

I am also keen to do rather more for senior administrators (Directors of Operations, Business Managers, etc.).  Dr Peter Brierley and I are planning a residential conference for such people in March 2011 and possibly a London day event this coming summer.

I hope that all administrators employed by your church will join this national network (known as UCAN!).  Over 270 people have already registered after some limited publicity over the past few months.  Now the aim is to make UCAN more widely known.

There is no charge, but I ask for a nominal gift to cover expenses.  Please print out and complete the application form (see link below)  You should then post this to me.  Later this year the application process will all be online.

Four types of Administrator

Posts are categorised under four headings:

  • Senior Manager
  • Church Administrator
  • Office or Personal Assistant
  • Project Co-ordinator.

To understand what is meant by each of these four terms, and to see additional notes, click here.  To see lists of reasons why you and the whole Church will benefit from your membership, click here.

If you have any questions, let me know. I very much hope I shall be hearing from you soon.

This website

For those who work as Church Administrators: if you have not seen my website before, click on the red resources on the navigation and explore over 80 articles, training notes and health-checks, many of which I hope you will find highly relevant to your work.  I add new items about six times a year.

You might in particular like to see Article A15, Christian administration? - a theological introduction and Training Notes TN4, Advice for all church administrators and TN40, Appointing a Church Administrator. In the future I would like to add more items of specific relevance to such posts.
